Examples of foods not allowed because they are high in protein

Meat, fish, eggs, cheese, nuts, seeds, flour based foods eg bread, pasta, cakes and biscuits, cereals, pulses, soya, quorn, tofu, aspartame

Examples of foods allowed in VERY tiny quantities

Peas, broccoli, potato, baked beans, rice, Weetabix, cream.
eg 1 exchange* of peas = 25g. This is a single, small spoonful.

foods that can be eaten safely

Most fruit, some vegetables.

 

 

 

*1 exchange = 1g of protein, therefore 25g of peas contains 1g of protein.
Someone with severe PKU may only have 3 exchanges to last the whole day.
